Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups Nutella divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • Optional: 3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • Optional: flaky sea salt for topping

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Line an 8-inch or 9-inch square pan with parchment paper or foil, leaving overhang for easy removal.
  • In a large bowl, beat the softened butter on high speed until smooth and creamy.
  • Add the brown sugar and beat until light and fluffy, about 1–2 minutes.
  • With the mixer on low, add eggs and vanilla, then increase speed and mix until combined.
  • Beat in 1 cup of Nutella and salt until smooth and fluffy.
  • Add flour and mix on low speed just until combined. Do not overmix.
  • Fold in chocolate chips if using.
  • Spread batter evenly into prepared pan.
  • Drop teaspoonfuls of remaining Nutella over the batter and swirl gently with a knife.
  • Sprinkle lightly with sea salt if desired.
  • Bake for 32–36 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  • Cool completely in the pan, then lift out and cut into squares.

Notes

  • Do Not Overbake: Slightly underbaked brownies stay fudgier.
  • Room Temperature Eggs: Helps create a smoother batter.
  • Nutella Swirl: Don’t over-swirl or it will blend into the batter.
  • Storage: Store airtight at room temperature or refrigerate up to 4 days.
  • Serving Idea: Warm slightly and serve with vanilla ice cream.
